Well I was at the gun show yesterday, which turned out to be one of the best ones we've had in a very long time. I was looking at a booth that had some customized builds, very nice looking rifles by the way, and I came across a 6.8 SPC. I looked at the barrel for markings, but I couldn't find where it said which twist and chamber was used. So, in order to find out the specs I decided to interupt the dealer, who was feeding his BS to anyone that would.

When I asked him, he promptly said "It's a 1:9.5 twist with Sammi chamber." After I asked why he would use out of date specs, he tried to make me look like a fool in front of the small crowd that was listening with this response. "I know all the people are up on 11 twist barrels, but I shoot heavier bullets and needed a faster twist to stablize the 130gr bullets I use. You just can't get that kind of performace with a 1:11." So I told him that I have personally shot 130gr bullets with my 1:11 with no problems, and people have no problem shooting heavier bullets with 1:12 twist barrels. Then I told him about my experience with my old 1:9.5 Kotonics and about the much improved performance I got once I switched to a Bison 1:11.

With that said, he started to get extremely flustered and responds "Well, I build match rifles and I want the best performace possible which is why I use Model 1 sales barrels." I just had to laugh and walk away. There just isn't any use arguing with idiots like that.

Not sure what booth it is. But check this out.

The guy does have some nice rifles. One was using a Vltor Mur with FA and shell deflector, a UBR stock, then it had some knock off Leupold CQ/T 1x3 scope that was cheap as hell. I think it is the CQ/T (it's the one that has picatinny rales on the tube). The glass looked like shit, but hey it's match grade right.

The real shame is that, even though that guy might have one day known that he was promulgating BS, every time he makes a sale he probably begins to believe his own sales pitch a little more. There's probably no turning him around now, especially since he probably spends all his time making those "match" grade guns and never gets out to shoot/compare them with anyone else's.

I agree. He has probably never even compared the difference between a proper 6.8 barrel and the crap he sales.

you either ask them to try that without the bullshit on thier lips OR my personal favorite is to state that since they have been talking so much shit they obviously swallowed a bit in the process.

I remember when i first bought my RRA 6.8, i was a total newb, recently single, with plenty of money to spare. So i saw this thing at the gunshow, thought it was a great idea and snagged it up... then i asked "Oh! i need some magazines, do you have 6.8 magazines?" The vendor replied "no we don't have 6.8 specific magazines, but 5.56 magazines work just the same, there's no difference." So i said "great, gimme 4 of those new P-mags" Sure enough... bullshit. In fact, the magazines were the reason i found this site, looking for more info on the 6.8. (glad i did)

Anyways, was at a gun show not long ago, and had a dealer talking to another customer about his 6.8 for sale, and sure enough, he tried to tell the guy regular 5.56 mags worked just fine, no problems what so ever. So i intervined and told him that wasn't so, that you can only fit like 5 in before having feeding problems. Then he tried to act like i was full of shit, lol. Some people...

Thanks for all the great info guys, this place has helped me tremendously.

The guy did have some nice builds. He even had an AR-10 that looked nice. The main sign he had behind his booth was a YHM flag. I didn't talk to him since buck had already told me about him. I guess I should have rattled his cage a bit. Too bad he's full of it, he had some quality builds.:a33:

Hey bull, you still have those 5.56 mags?

I haven't been to a gunshow in awhile, but I have heard a lot of similar BS from the big box stores around. There some guys that work at them that really know their stuff. It seems that more than not seem to know a certain segment of info. You ask them questions about a common bolt action rifle and they may have decent information. But if you start asking more information about specific firearms, ARs, 1911s, etc. I often find out I know more about the products that they are selling than they do.

I'm certainly no expert and it would be nice to have sales people that can accurately answer your questions.

I would bet other things are at play here. He may have had this barrel for some time now, or it was the only 6.8 he could find in stock. Anyway you look at it from a builder in business stand point, either he (honestly states the twist) and sells the barrel to somebody not in the know, or he eats it. With each passing day that barrel becomes less interesting and therefore less valueable because of it's specs. If a business man is to suceed he MUST move product.

I wouldn't be too hard on him when viewed in this light. Anyone shooting commercially manufactured ammo probably won't have a problem with his rig and will be happy they have a 6.8 in their stable. As you said, his other builds seemed to be top notch and I bet his next 6.8 will be more up to date.

Reminds me of the time I went into a shop and asked if they had a H&K USPc in .357sig. or a Sig P229 in .357sig. (pretty specific request). The GunstoreCommando promptly told me that they did not have what I was looking for, but had both models in .40S&W (clue, if someone specifically askes for something, they already have done their homework and know what they are looking for). He then went on to say that the Sig, was a good all around gun and the H&K was what you would want if you were going into the jungles of Rwanda. I have always found that if you actually listen to what people are saying to you, you will be able to answer their questions in an intelligent manner and in the above case might have been actually been able to make a sale or had a return customer rather than have me laugh and walk away never to return.

Customers know much more about firearms in general now than they did say 15 years ago before the internet became so widely used. Before that customers went off the info from the "gun pro" (who wasn't) at the local shop and firearms companies who thought they could build any piece of crap and sell it because they had been doing just that for 40-50 years.
I believe all companies are going to have to do better to compete or earn their share of the market, the 6.8 has proved the market can make manufactures change.
I'll bet M1 had 10000 barrels made 5 years ago and are still trying to sell them, then they will also change to a different twist.
