I did a search, and couldn't find this discussion specifically, so
here goes the question:

Why did SSA start offering Large Rifle Primer pockets in 6.8 SPC
brass, if Small Rifle Primer pockets make for smaller SD's, and
longer brass life, with stout loads? Some advantage, or just
a marketing thing?

People were complaining about the lack of small rifle primers so SSA produced 20K (I think) if the large primer brass for those who had large rifle primers.

FOlks on the forums were complaining about not being able to find Remington Large primered brass so SSA did a special run of 20K to fill a void in the market. Plus large primers were easier to find than small primers so gave folks a workable combo. But it was a pure business decision.

Ron think you got it a bit off. Typo?

Very simple, there was enough of a request that they made them. As they were originally made as large primer by SSA they already had all the tooling so it was very easy for them to do and it filled a request. Personally I would not use large primer cases if given the choice. They are completely unnecessary. The heads are weaker, they create larger velocity spreads. While grain for grain a large primer case may sometimes produce a little bit more vel it does so at a higher pressure. From Constructors testing the small primers when taken to the same max pressure loads produce more vel but they do use more powder to get to the same vel. Lareg primers as they have less head material will tend to have loose primer pockets sooner and the primers will tend to flatten and cup at lower pressures. This may be good for those that need it to gauge their loads, I prefer small primers until a case capacity needs a larger flame.
