I bought a stripped Stag bolt from a member here and was wondering what's the correct extractor to buy. Based on a quick search, I see conflicting info--some say Stag/CMT use standard 5.56 extractors while others say they are unique with a deeper groove.

I see PRI 6.8 extractors on Midway--will that work?

Thanks.

I would send Stag Arms an email with the question to see what they say. I've had really great luck and prompt responses from them regarding questions and issues! M4 Feedramps being the exception, but we won't open that can of worms...

Yes they are very sensitive on that subject. I agree that an email is the best way to get an answer from Stag.

I would think it has something to do with the diameter of the cartridge. Having said that, the 6.8 extractor is my choice. They will probably both work, though :D

Well, after not getting a response from Stag, I went ahead and ordered the PRI 6.8 SPC extractor from Midway for $28 including shipping.

Got it yesterday and did a comparison to one of the 5.56 extractors from my spare parts box. The groove width appears to be identical at around .065" (crude measuring with feeler gauges) as well as the depth of the cutout. The only thing I can think may be slightly different is the radius of the groove for the larger diameter case, but I have no way to measure that and I can't see a visual difference.

Appears I paid almost twice as much as I needed to when I could have just gotten a 5.56 one from Brownells for about $15 or used the one from my parts box. Should have waited for the expert (Tim_W) to jump in before ordering. Oh well, guess it can't hurt to have some extra parts lying around. Only problem is, they usually end up turning themselves into complete rifles at some point.

So, why does PRI sell a unique extractor for 6.8?

Yep, but I don't remember his comments.
