"Cheap" ammo may be cheap for a reason...(6.5G Wolf)

Here is an interesting post. One of the gripes with the 6.8spc is the lack of cheap ammo. This is one thing that the 6.5G has. However, as I have often said, Wolf is not my favorite. the cheap 6.5G is about $15/box locally while 6.8SPC Hornady VMAX is $19/box.

Check out this review/experience of the cheap Wolf 6.5G:

that is a none too glowing review... 5 MOA is awful with a gun and round thats supposed to be so accurate...
There is cheap and there is good - they rarely go together.
One of things I keep reading about how expensive 68 ammo is compared to 65G (especially on internet forums). With unbiased reviews like that it makes me feel a little easier about paying $18.99 for a box of Hornady VMAX.

It is so easy to twist thigs around on the net. It is true that The Grendel had 1 cheap round. They now have two cheap rounds for the Grendel. What you don't hear is that the rest of the ammo, AA and Black Hills, is several dollars higher than the SPC ammo. So yes, the Grendel has the cheapest but it also has the most expensive amo while the SPC has the ammo in between. Plus there is no way in hell that I would spend hundreds of dollars on a SS barrels and then fed it 5 MOA ammo. I'd rather reload.
I wouldn't want to be counting too much on Russia giving us much of anything
worthwhile in light of goings on in the muddle east...

On the other hand..the Chicoms could shut us down pretty much anytime they
like..based upon how much of our day 2 day we get from them..

For me it was Tim and KT and Art at SSA that convinced me to get off the
fence and fall over on the 6.8 SPC side...

How quickly we forget...

MANY of us on this forum bought up to 1200 rounds of QUALITY 6.8 SPC SSA 110g Pro Hunter ammo on the Sportsman's Guide deal back in the Spring for as little as $10.81 per box delivered...!

True...the Sportsman's Guide deal is done....but you can still buy 6.8 SPC SSA 90g SIERRA VARMINTER for $14.98 a box right NOW. I just bought another 400 rounds of the 90g.

Sometimes quality ammo can be cheap too. It just requires some patience and when the opportunity presents itself...the ability to stock up quickly. Timing is everything.

Kerry
There will also be more to come in that area

What is needed is not $10 a box ammo that is 5+MOA not even 3+moa. But ammo $12-$13 with 2 moa. Now SSA has the best brass by far and there is no way they are ever going to comprise that to meet a price point. You can only get so much out of cutting bullet costs. What needs to happen is a mid case with a cheap bullet. Remington or S&B case with a cheap 100 FMJ. Something like 115 Rem FMJ but at 100 to lower material cost even more. That with enough quality control to get 2 moa and 3ven only 2400 FPS is more then enough for a training plinking round and can be don with the cheapest powders out there. Put that out there at $11-12 a box and it will sell at a break neck pace and will double 6.8 rifle sales.
15 bucks a box right now for 90 grain varminter 6.8 ammo from SSA
I contacted Wolf Performance Ammo last week about 6.8 ammo & this was their response:

"There are no plans on producing this caliber in the foreseeable future."
As long as they keep producing primers does it matter? S and B is making 6.8 ammo( even though it is over priced)Wolf will follow soon. The Russians just haven't figured out how to shrink the 30 cal yet.
SSA is the best in the buisness 8) 8)
Easy Paulo we need you around. That is the fiercest I have heard you keep the B.P. down

Cheap ammo is cheap for a reason and I dont mind paying for good ammo but I use wolf in my 556 all the time and when the GF is out blasting with my rifles or I am getting new people into shooting my AR's it is great for that. I would like a cheaper plinking round to use in my 6.8's so that when I invited people to the range to use them i wasnt spending a lot on it.

Either way, we need to get more people using the 6.8 so then there will be more ammo available.

I even started drinking Starbucks coffee at work. White Chocolate Mocha with Skim Milk   That shit is delicious.
I only like the starbucks ice coffee with the caramel... and I only get that when i am flying becuase thats the only thing available.

now a Dunkin doughnuts hazelnut with a couple expresso shots and I am good to go :D
The caramel frappuccino. Its absolutely delicious, but I tend to hide it when people drive by. You don't want to get caught drinking one of those in public.
