Just a question for the guys that have dealt with 5.56. I have the chance to pick up a Bushmaster A2 dissipator upper plus the bolt group. The guy is really picky and seems to have taken very good care of it. Probably 300-400 down the tube just at the range. What is the value of this? He is wanting $800 with the bcg which is a rra. I want to pick it up as a plinker and to have a 5.56 and to use prairie dog hunting. What is the take of the experts?

Just my opinion, but I think that is a little over priced. My very first AR was a bushmaster A2 and I payed 850 for the rifle after taxes. And that was the complete gun, upper and lower. The problem I have with A2 models is the fixed carry handle, which I hated because of the problems with optics. But as I write this, we are in more of a feeding frenzy when it comes to uppers and guns, so the value is what someone is willing to pay, which is ultimately up to you!

Does it make a difference that this is a dissipator? I looked on Bushy and they do ave these priced a little higher than the standard. How hard is it to mount optics? All I kow are A3's and I wish they were a little taller. (I have a big head)

I checked out the bushmaster site before I posted and the onl;y difference I see is the fact that the forearm is longer than a standard carbine. That looks a lil more awkward to me, but it has the advantage of a longer sight radius... which is capable of being more accurate. The reason I said that about the optics is that you have to mount any optics on top of the carry handle, which contains a single hole to screw the optic mount into. i constantly had to tighten the screw and had to rezero everytime I went to the range. Also it looks awkward to me with the optic on top of the carry handle. And last but not least it wasnt a comfortable shooting position with the optic mounted that high

Way overpriced, especially for an A2. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it. I don't care for A2 uppers.

Correct me if I'm wwrong, but doesn't that model have a rifle length gas system? It would slow the action down. It is over priced, though. If you want a 5.56 upper to plink with I would wait for a Bravocompanyusa.com upper. They make very high quality stuff and it is very reasonable.

It has a cut down FSB at the carbine length gas system, then it has the FSB at the rifle length position.

Well, maybe 1/2 worthless. You do get the longer sight radius, although it would be better with mid gas. I would not however want rifle gas on a 16".

And yeah, I'd shop around, although getting a BCM might be optimistic unless you have fast shopping reflexes. In Nov. I bought an A3 BM 20" gov't from PK for $380, then I added CH and BCG from separate vendors for $170 (with S&H), which totals $550.

Shop around and save money. Other companies offer this design if that's what you want. CMMG offers these, and I believe they have midlength gas (better) available as well in theirs. Much less than $800.
