Mike,
When getting your lower together for the Xtreme you should start with standard buffers and springs,
whether you choose a rifle or CAR stock.
The rifle buffer tube is long and has a long, heavy buffer with a long, low rate spring.
The CAR buffer tube is shorter and has a shorter, lighter buffer with a shorter, higher rate spring.
I have found the standard CAR stock to allow excessive cycling speed vs. the standard rifle stock, using the same upper, a 20" HBAR 556. Adding the SSS spring to the CAR stock reduced the speed to similar levels as the rifle stock.
You can pin any upper to any lower.
Whether you need more or less resistance depends on how the upper is setup.
Gas port location and size are the major factors.
The Xtremes are being setup to operate properly with the standard CAR buffer and spring,
once properly broken in.
