I think it can be done but excluding optics.

Lower: 125-175
LPK: 65-85
Stock Kit: 60-65

Upper receiver: 109-^^^^ (depending on Billet options)
Gas Block: 39-69
Gas Tube: 16
BCG:130-^^^^(Depending on bolt and carrier
Hand Guard: 29-300 (Depeding on plastic/FF/drop in)
Barrel: 200-400

I got a total of 878 for ya, that using a low pro gas block and MI ff tube.

That leaves you without an optic.

Options for optics: Magpul MBUS, Primary Arms makes some nice red dot's based off the aimpoint design.

95 dollars for either MBUS or Primary Arms red dot.

Also have to consider aprox a dollar a round for ammo. This is the reason I picked up a.22 dedicated upper :D.

OR:

Buy an a complete upper from Titan Armory or AR Perf and have a quality built product right off the bat, all you have do is secure a lower.

Lot's of options out there.

essential arms upper/lower combo $185.
bison barrel $200
LPK $75.
stag bolt $75
bolt carrier $75
stock kit from M&A $55
gas system $40 plus depending on block.
handguards or FF tube. $50 plus

that comes out to $755 for as cheap as you can go. mags are about $13 each then you need ammo amd some type of sights. some of that stuff could be found cheaper too like the LPK's are about $65 someplaces.

easy to do under 1K. AND you get a properly speced rifle. that is more important than anything.

Do you own any AR's in .223/5.56?
This is a critical question. If you do you can just get a decent upper from one of the suggested vendors and be able to get an optic to round it out. Of course you still need mags and ammo.

Not enough aftermarket goodies.:(
There's plenty if you know where to look. ProMag finally has 20 round mags for it, which are significantly cheaper than the Barret I just got. I've only heard good things about the Mini in 6.8, except it's not Spec II. Since it's a newer Ranch model, it comes with the Ruger rings. There's a whole lot of stuff out there for them.

BTW, I just got the last part of a 6.8 AR done, so the whole thing without mags went for under $1000. DPMS complete lower($325), Bison Armory complete upper (around $650), total just under $1000.

I would test a mag or two of the promags just to make sure they run smooth.
C-products mags can also be had for around 12.00 give or take. I prefer the grey bodied ones with the black magpul 6.8 followers.

All this talk about 6.8 AR-15s for under $1k is not good... The BRD is quickly spreading from my brain to my wallet.

Another way to save both money and weight on a build is to use a cav lower. No buttstock, extension, castle nut etc to buy just add LPK and buffer. Also these lowers are significantly lighter than your average lower half IIRC they are the lightest option out there.
