Just stopped by my lgs to see what he had in parts for my build and he said not to build a .338 federal because it's a dead cartridge unless I plan in only necking up 308 brass and handloading it forever. He said I should put the AR-10 lower I bought to the side for now and build a 300 blk, 350 legend, or 7.62x39

Looking at the numbers, if I build it in .358 win with a 16-18" barrel it would be about equal to my .450 bushmaster in performance in a heavier gun... Had kind of a crazy idea though... How about either .300 wsm or .300 saum with a 20" tube?

If I were to go that route I’d look at the Ruger compact magnum.

If memory serves me correctly it was designed to run optimally from a 20” barrel.

But I think you couldn’t go wrong with the original idea of the .338 federal, I don’t think it is a dead cartridge.

Remember when all the people in the know said the 10mm auto was dead?
