I am getting more and more interested in getting an upper chambered in .243 for my boys to hunt with. I have an xtreme 6.8spc on order and anxiously awaiting. My question is, will a dpms or any other brand .243 upper fit on a 5.56 or multi lower or does it have to be put on an AR10 lower? Or if either of these are wrong for a .243 upper, which will work for a .243 upper and will it work for my 6.8SPC or will i have to have 2 different lowers?

for 243 Win you are stuck with an AR10 platform. Anything on the 308 case is AR10. 6.8 etc will go on AR15 platform as well as a host of other calibers. I'm sure someone out there can build you an upper in a 6mm/243 caliber that will go on a AR15 platform if you reload. Talk to Constructor (Harrison) at AR15Performance. He mentions some 6mm wildcats he's worked on that fit on AR15 platforms that are formed off fairly common brass. I've got a MK68 from him that is awesome.

With the performance of the new 6.8 barrels using 85G TSX rounds...approaching the velocities of the .243...and the proven killing and accuracy performance of the economical 110g Pro Hunter...I have to ask...why?

The longer .243 round cannot fit in a AR15 lower which limits its use to a heavier, more cumbersome AR10 system. The ammunition costs are about the same for equal bullet construction. If you reload the 6.8 uses less powder. Recoil is about the same.... What is the perceived advantage of the .243...?

I am a very big 7mm/08 fan. A round even more effective than the .243.... but realistically the 6.8 does everything I did previously hunting with the 7mm/08 or .308....and as a result, they now stay in the gun safe.

For hunting here in Missouri the 6.8 is all thats needed. With it I have never felt under gunned.

Wait until you have a chance to hunt with your Xtreme. I think your boys will fall in love with it...and you will be impressed as well.

Just my $.02...

I have a 30.06 and would be happy hunting with a 6.8spc but i wasn't sure if the recoil was close to a .243. I have a 6 year old and a 13 year old boy and want to be able to have an accurate rifle for both to use. Of course the 6 year old is limited to a .22 and .177. But one of these days........
I guess i'll probably wind up getting 2 - 6.8 uppers( 1 for patrol/ 1 for hunting) Now if I can just convince the wife.

My only .243 is a Rem Model 7 youth model which is pretty light. In my opinion my 6.8 rifles recoil less than the .243.... but not by much. A heavier AR10 in .243 vs an AR15 in 6.8 should be a toss up. On bolt guns of equal weight I would suspect the 6.8 would recoil less with equal bullet weight....but just an educated guess.

BTW...Someone recently posted a 5 YO girl on utube shooting a 6.8 without a problem. I think the recoil will be very acceptable for your boys.

As far as accuracy...I have yet to have a 6.8 upper that cannot group at or less than 1 MOA with off the shelf SSA Pro Hunters...as long as I do my part. Three of them typically shoot .5 - .75 MOA. They inherently are accurate rifles if assembled well with just a good production quality barrel.

Some on the forum have reported .3 MOA groups with match grade barrels.

I am a big fan of 243, but going to the larger AR10 platform was a no-go for me. That and the price of ammo offers no advantage over 6.8. I think 243 kicks a tiny bit more than 6.8 but not much. My wife can shoot 6.8 without any problems. it is pretty mild.

6mmHagar and 6mmWOA/Holliger will fit in an AR-15. One reason to shy away from a .243 is they are notorious for short barrel life. David Tubb's 6mmX and 6mmXC rounds are reduceds capacity .243 cases in an effort to burn less powder. Way too much powder has to go through a very small diameter hole. There lies the problem. David said he would love to shoot the .243 but the barrels only average 800 +/- rounds before the barrel is shot out.

Thanks for all the replies. I believe I will be purchasing 2 xtreme 6.8SPC uppers from ARPerformance. I'm glad to know such a great rifle will be a part of my boys hunting experience.

Make sure to mount a collapsible stock on the lower receiver as you can tailor the length of pull to shooters of smaller stature easily. Your boys will have a blast with an AR carbine in 6.8.

I let my neighbor's kids (8 and 11) fire my 6.8 the other day. They were able to with no problems at all.
