Dave Fortier asked me to do it, but I would rather not.

I am doing several pieces for him, but I feel that many others here have a far greater working knowledge and ins and outs of the round itself. I do not reload, so I am already lacking...

So, if you feel your able to write a good piece... let me know.... Tim Pack is doing one for the 6.5 G and Dave said he would like a 6.8 SPC article to balance it out.

Some of you want to do this... I just know it. so lets hear who?

I know there are people here that are far more technically knowledgeable than I am when it comes to the ins and outs of the 6.8SPC and how it has evolved, so I'll leave that to someone else. If someone would like me to edit the piece for grammar and such, I have written a lot of articles in public arenas (finance mostly) so I'll be happy to volunteer that way to further the cause.

I would like to propose one suggestion, which may be slightly controversial: I think the author should go easy on the evolution of the round and instead focus on the here and now. It would be too easy to get bogged down in the SAAMI chamber which begot the SPCII chamber, which may have the wrong angle in the blueprints, so it begot the DMR chamber, and then there is the Noveske chamber, etc -- and that doesn't even begin to touch the twist rates, which vary from 9.5 to 13! A reader unfamiliar with the 6.8 will get bogged down and may not make it to the promised land. Maybe a quick piece on how there were several false starts, but how through the dedication of a few people the cartridge has evolved into something that can reach 2800-3000fps with some hard hitting bullets out of a standard AR platform.

  #1 suggestion kiss
keep it simple stupid
i was talking with a friend at work and he asked me if i knew anything about the 6.8mm in the ar.
He says that he had read enough on the internet about the different chamber sizes and twist rates to be confused and had all but given up on the 6.8mm.
I gave him the location of this site and told him about some of the proformance that some here were getting out of the 6.8mm in 16" barrels.

Just an example of why we(6.8mm peeps) need to get the word out.
But we need the correct best foot forward word out
maybe point out those manufactures that make 1:11/12 barrels and rifles with the correct spec'd chambers rifling and correct gas length.
I think the more exposure with the correct spec's would increase interest.
i hope someone smarter than me can pick up that flag and stand up in front of everyone and lead the 6.8mm hoard forward towards more respect
and with more interest would mean more people buying and wanting more ammo which would equal....cheaper (cost wise) ammo......
sorry wolf need not apply....

How about a compilation? Seriously, this is a forum of many, and a few have led the way so to speak. We don't want just anyone volunteering to write this as Shooting Times is a widely read magazine. Just anyone volunteering to write this isn't the way to go. This is an opportunity and I feel many of the members here would agree that this is a great way for our voices to be heard.

Our main contributors should be in no particular order:

DocGKR - History, development, and benefits to military and LE.
Art Kalwas - SSA, ammo expert obviously and supporter.
Tim_W - 6.8 Encyclopedia (that's a compliment).
Harrison (Constructor) - High performance uppers, 6.8 testing, differences between previous spec's and current offerings.
HTR - 6.8 fan and very knowledgeable 6.8 sportsman and reloader.

A summary from each of these guys compiled in an article would cover lots of ground, be very informative, and probably entertaining as well. I'm sure we can put this together for David.

What is the intended nature of the article? Technical (i.e., "how-to"), anecdotal ("Why the 6.8 is Great" or "My Date With a 6.8"), or informational (i.e., a product or performance review - "Current State of the 6.8")?

One bit of advice for whomever authors the article - don't try to impress the reader with excess jargon or the latest gee-whiz techno mall-ninja gadgetry on your equipment. Text space is at a premium and it is really annoying when an author digresses from the theme of the article to expound upon all the cool stuff they have. Fortier has really matured over the years as a "gun 'riter", but even he slips into this mode from time to time. One phrase I don't care to ever see in print again is "time to run a few drills" - what, are we talking guns or machine tools?

BubbaFAL has a good point. I understand appeasing advertisers, however some gun writers sound a little too much like a NASCAR driver.

"One February morning it warmed up to -30 degrees, a perfect day to take the Stag 6.8 Model 7 with a Daniel Defense 12.0 four railed forend, new composite Magpul front and rear back up sights, PWS muzzle brake, Yankee Hill bipod mount, Harris bipod, Surefire 6P LED light in a Vltor offset mount, Magpul PRS stock in new LaRue UDE color, Tango Down Urban Coyote handgrip with two Ever Ready CR123 Lithium batteries in storage, RRA Winter Trigger guard, Bobro vertical grip, Geiselle High Speed trigger, LaRue SPR mount with a Schmidt and Bendor 3-12x50 USMC scope with the improved mildot reticle, Tennebrex anti-reflection device, Butler Creek flip covers, Leupold Cosign indicator, Viking Tactics 2-point sling to the range for a few drills."

Art what happend to the LCD TV in the stock?  I do like your idea of the group approach.
This was an early prototype used for the article. The LCD HD in stock TV appeared as an option in regular production A2 stocked Model 7's produced after January 17, 2009 per Stag's press representative.

Very happy to hear Fortier is soliciting input.

I think the compilation idea has merit...take the length of the piece, divided by the number of worthy victims...err, I mean volunteers...and give each his say.

I'm also in agreement with the consensus above re: keeping it to the "here and now," and not re-hashing the history. Likewise with avoiding the NASCAR effect, which has made me cancel my subscription to G&A. There's just no meat left after you've spent 3 pages saying how great the rail and grip are.

And, like mark21, I'm more than happy to be an editor. Former English teacher, current legal contract writer, future Xtreme shooter (#14) :D

And as President Reagan once said, there's no limit to what man can do, if he doesn't care who gets the credit.

I must say, compared to the "other" gun sites, 68forums is thick with intentional irony...

And I like it like that  Seriously, Art, I so internalized your sigline, I forgot where I saw it.

Way off topic, here's a tagline I thought of using (anyone using it yet?) based on a funny remark made on arf.com:

"Who needs an HD shotgun, when all it takes is a looped recording of "shuck-shuck" to scare the invaders away?"

Umm, back to the scheduled broadcast :?:

FYI this is for shooting times online subsidiary www.tacticalgunfan.com

I was unable to fit the whole web address in the title and simply shortened it but forgot to include the web address in the first post.

I think we need to discuss BRIEFLY the development and talk mostly about the here and now of the round. The article should highlight the ballistics, uses, energy transference, and applications. Forget the botch job by remington highlight the new tech like the ssa 85 grain 3k fps stuff....imo

Maybe let people know that there is ammo out there too! My co-workers won't touch the caliber because they feel that ammo is too rare to find, and I can't seem to convince them otherwise. They are all HUGE AR fans, and I know they would love the caliber if they would get past their misinformation.

I think the increased power should be emphasized and remphasized. My long time shooting buddy and great fan of all things military belted out a "Holy Shit!" when I fired my first round at his range. My Noveske 14.5" with a permanently attached muzzle brake let out an Oooomph. He was impressed (as he should be). Accuracy is good and the increased power makes you feel like you've got a weapon, not a varmint rifle. It's not a .308 and that's a good thing. The cartridge has a certain balance about it. Kind of the Goldy-Locks of the shooting world. Not too big, not too small, just about right. And it's a fun cartridge. Just a little more power induces bigger smiles all around.

Tim W/Const would be one of my top picks. Not that he doesnt have anything to do but a little free advertising might help down the road.
