the gel tests would be the same, it is the distance the rounds will expand/frag at that will change with the different velocities....

No, its not that much slower either, Randal has posted velocities out of his 8 inch LWRC PSD on this site, the 6.8 is very effecient and is less effected by shorter barrels then other cartridges.

What will be different is the range at which you'll get fragmentation / upset. If you spend some time digging all the data you need is here on the site. rcrandall has the short barrel and has posted the velocities he was getting. If you then take a look at the velocities paulosantos was getting in the link below, you'll be able to get a good idea of what velocities you COULD acheive with handloads.

then you need to take a look at the characteristics of the bullets you're thinking of using and get an effective range. I'm guessing that's about a 200 yard effective range though I think rcrandall and I discussed it in one of his threads and he felt it was longer. Of course, even beyond the effective range you're still going to have a useful weapon, it just won't be doing as much terminal damage as it would at a higher velocity.
