Greetings to you guys at 68forums.com. Gunbrokers.com team recomended I browse here and ask a few questions.

I am in the market for my first AR-15 type gun and I am alot overwhelmed by what caliber, who to buy from and what to pay plus plus plus. Should I purchase the upper and lower seperatley or suck it up and buy a unit fully assembled then add my optics, light, etc? My agenda is whitetail deer hunting along with pig and predator hunting in the Texas Hill Country. Currently I shoot a 25.06 and 22.250. I want a setup that will allow me the ability to shoot pigs and predators at night. I crave good optics on my rifles and binoculars.

What I think I know is the following: The 6.8 cartridge is mo better than 223/5.56 in terms of kinetic energy and is very fast. Hence a superior round for killing deer and hogs? However, do I buy a lower which would give me the flexibility to switch out uppers in different calibers? At the range is the 223/5.56 more fun and cheaper to shoot than the 6.8? Does Barrett manufacture the best 6.8 or would I be paying for the name? I already know that I waited several months too late and that I am going to get price gouged on my purchase but I am prepared.

Sorry for all the questions and as you can see I confess my lack of knowledge clearly. Thanks in advance for your expert advice and recomendations.

Welcome.

Someone will be along shortly to point you to the tacked Newbie threads on ar15.com. I would, but I can't access them from where I am now.

I also suggest you start a thread in the general firearm discussion forum and post your quiestions there. This forum is for introductions only and therefore doesn't get as much traffic as the other forums.

However, do I buy a lower which would give me the flexibility to switch out uppers in different calibers? If you buy a lower separate from the upper, it actually saves a lil tax because its not a complete weapon, but yes, the AR-15 lower will work for .223, 6.8, 6.5G and a few others.
At the range is the 223/5.56 more fun and cheaper to shoot than the 6.8? I dont know if I would say it is more fun, but it is cheaper to shoot, but on the bright side, ammo prices look like they may be decreasing some for the 6.8 mm. Do you reload? if so that would make the rounds even cheaper.
Does Barrett manufacture the best 6.8 or would I be paying for the name? Thats gonna be a matter of opinion, but I think it is safe to say that their chamber and twist is not up to par with some of the more in tuned companies
I already know that I waited several months too late and that I am going to get price gouged on my purchase but I am prepared.Eh it wont be so bad, if you can get your hands on a complete lower, you might wanna check out http://www.ar15performance.com or look the the thread titled the Xtreme. The xtreme is gonna be a 6.8 mm SPC upper with an advanced twist and chamber, with some other nicks and nacks that most other companies dont add. And it will be reasonably priced also
