I hope that I find everyone well. I have been kicking around what I would build for my next project, whether it would be an AR-10, a Grendel or 6.8SPC. Well I pretty much ruled out the AR-10 when I went ahead and purchased a Sun Devil lower receiver, and I really think I have settled on the 6.8. I hope that yall don't mind a few questions.

As far as I understand, what I am really wanting is a barrel that is chambered for SPCII, rather than a barrel chambered for SAAMI. Currect?

I would also assume that its best to purchase a barrel and bolt combination. However, if I dont, are headspace guages easily available?

Standard AR feed ramps in the upper receiver? Or does the 6.8 feed better with M4 carbine type feed ramps?

I would assume that torque for 6.8 when installing the barrl is the same as when installing a 5.56 barrel?

Any thoughts would also be appreciated. I am planning on an 18 inch barrel.

thanks

I will answer the questions that I can for ya:

In my opinion DMR>spcII> SAAMI
DMR is chambers by COnstructor here on the site for his business which can be found here... http://www.ar15performance.com . Most consider his chamber to be more of a match type chamber. I believe Noveske has changed to a Mod 0 chamber, but dont hold me to that. But for a basic summary, SAAMI is outdated, SPCII is the standard for major production companies, DMR and others are more high performance to get the most from the round.

I believe match bolts/barrels are best, but in this current buying environment, it may be hard to get that, seeing as how barrels are in high demand/short supply. I believe the Go / no go guages are availible tho

M4 feedramps are pretty much a necessity, especially if you plan on shooting lower grain, high velocity rounds, seems some have had problems with the 85 and 90 gr rounds to chamber without the M4 feed ramps cut.

MANSON 6.8 SPC NO GO HEADSPACE GAUGE

M4 Feedramps are pretty much a must for the 6.8SPC. The SPCII or DMR Chambers are the best ones to get.

Gentlemen, thank you for answering my questions. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
The other thing you did not mention which is important is the rifling twist. early-on most commercial barrels were 1:10. If combined with the standard SAAMI chamber, the barrel was generally limited to low pressure, commercial loads (it would not handle the SSA combat loads). The testing performed by Tim_W, Constructor and HTR (report posted in this forum) has shown that a 1:11 is preferred and a 1:12 is about ideal. Several major AR manufactures have recently switched to 1:11 twist in their barrels.
