I looked at a Bushmaster Carbon 15 today. Given that Obama  is pursuing and Assalt Weapons Ban, it might be time to round out my ARs with a 9mm upper or dedicated carbine. First question -- can I just use a 9mm upper on my lower? Or do I need to change the buffer and spring every time? I'm leaning toward a dedicated 9mm as a "girl's gun" for my wife and my daughter to use. Any experience with the Carbon 15 or Rock River or even the Olympic Arms? I understand the Oly has one designed for Glock mags -- since I have Glock 17 and 18 magazines that may be a good choice -- anyone have any experince with these?

I currently have a .22 LR upper from Spike's Tactical, a 6.8mm upper from LWRC, and a 5.56 LWRC rifle on order (coming soon) and a 7.62mm SABR on order from LWRC as well. I really like the LMT piston upper - I may get that as well. I've also been buying normal-capacity magazines every month as well and am up to 10 6.8mm PRI waffle mags and one C-Products mag, and about 8 Glock 9mm magazines including two 33 round G18 mags. :D I also have 1000 rounds of 6.8mm from SSA!

I see no one else has pitched in yet so I'll throw out what I know. I don't have a 9mm AR myself, but I've looked at them and asked around.

For one, you need a dedicated 9mm lower like RRA has, or you need a magazine block inserted and fastened to a regular AR receiver to line up and secure the magazines.

Second, there are different magazines used, so shop for magazine pricing and availability also while you're shopping for the 9mm AR. Some may be reasonably priced, and others out of this world. Colt has one type I believe, RRA uses modified UZI magazines if I recall correctly. There are conversions out there using other mags. Hahn Precision makes mag blocks for pistol caliber conversions, check their website out.

So switching calibers from 6.8 to 9mm is a few more parts than pushing a couple pins.

By the way, RRA is close to releasing their new 40SW rifles if you like that caliber.
