Captured 86 shots on the lab radar for this setup:

10.5" ARP 6.8 SPC II Barrel
FC Cases
CCI450 Primers
90gr Gold Dot bullet
AA2200 @ 30.4gr
Loaded to cannelure
50F, 90%

Avg FPS: 2,480
Avg FPS @ 100y: 2,111
Avg FPS @ 150y: 1,986 (very small sample of 6 shots)
SD: 20+ FPS, I need to work on this, I haven't tuned this load for accuracy or SD. This exercise was more about velocity at 100y

Summary: I wondered if the 90gr GD in a 10.5" barrel be used for hunting at 100y, and in, based on it's minimum opening velocity. I don't know what that is for the 90gr GD (I'm sure it's in an xman thread) but assuming it's around 1,800 FPS, I think we could conclude an expectation of decent expansion at 100y (2,111 fps) with a 10.5" barrel and this bullet. I don't plan on hunting with this barrel, but it could act as a self defense round for large 4 legged animals here in Washington (hiking/atv/truck gun).

I have the same 10.5 set-up with my old Bushnell HoloSight and a 5X tip-off magnifier. I built it for ear-shooting pigs from tree stands. I just started putting together some 90gr GD loads for it. (got 250 from RMR) This will be the mid point of the first ladder I run in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the post bud, saved me a lot of research.

Here is my recent work up for 90 Grain Gold Dot loads. Stag 7H with 21” barrel. Fired from bench with sand bags for rest. Caldwell chrono. 5 shot groups. Measure top 4 to dampen out shooter error 🙂

S&B brass and Federal AR match primers for both. OAL 2.29.

H322
Charge. Avg vel. SD. Group size
30.7g. 2842. 3.9. .547
31.0g. 2878. 3.2. .844
31.3g. 2903. 9.6. .640
31.6g. 2920 9.5. .993

H4198
Charge. Avg vel. SD. Group size
28.3g. 2836. 17.9. .992
28.6g. 2859. 20.8. .942
28.9g. 2905. 9.2. .604
29.2g. 2936. 7.2. .505

No pressure signs on any load. Probably could have gone higher on charge but reached my objective of accurate load above 2900fts. 29.2g of H4198. Obviously more testing required to determine repeatability of load. Appears to be an accuracy node to me though.

Federal 90gr Gold Dot (Factory) [BC 0.215 G1 measured]
18” ARP 2915 fps

In the picture below, the Nosler's 90 BC is in the front row and Federal's 90 GD in the second row. Left to right is 100 yards, 200 yards, 300 yards (1850 fps), and 1650 fps. The 100-yard GD is turned over so you are looking at the base. This shows the 5 prongs that peel back on the Gold Dot. At 100 yards fired from an 18" barrel, the prongs/pedals actually wrap all the way around behind the base of the bullet. The 90 GD on the left is a 1200 fps impact while trying to use Trailboss to test minimum opening velocity. It was the only GD I have left that shows its basic shape.

Minimum expansion velocity is likely above 1900 fps for the Nosler 90gr BC. The 90 BC recovered at 300 yards and min velocity test, 1850 and 1650 fps, respectively, did not expand and way over-penetrate. Compared with the 90gr Gold Dot, the 90gr Bonded Core expansion was limited. The GD expanded as well below 1700 fps as the 90 BC did at 2150 fps.

Hope this gives you some good insight into the 90 GD's minimum velocity terminal performance.

Im looking forward to starting load development on the 90g Gold Dot in the next couple of days. I’ve finally got my brass, bullets, powder and primers all together. I’m going to start with my 16” ARP. Then work on my 18”. I’m hoping for < 1.5 moa and > 2900 fps. I’ll use it for shooting pigs, deer and antelope.

I just picked up 200 round of the XM68GD. I was very apprehensive about, now it at first. Now that I see this, I feel much better about it.

WOW, Where did you happen to come across that, if I may ask ? I've been looking, on & off for that same particular Load, but all I seem to come across are old adds from the initial market dump of a few years ago.

Ohh, that's great ! I'm currently sitting on 400+ rds of Hornandy 110 TAP, split evenly between the standard Load, & their 'Urban' TAP Loading, plus 100+ rds of Remington 115 OTM's. However, I've always wanted to try this 90 gr. GD Load, as it should shoot quite flat, & being a Fusion, 'bonded' Load, should also perform well at impact. OK, here's a question or two for you, What 's your price, & do you have an minimum purchase ? I don't need a case not can afford one at the moment, but will consider grabbing a few boxes, depending of course upon their price. I THANK YOU very much for your kind reply, & will look forward to hearing from you. Take care,

Best regards, Dom Pastore Jr. / [email protected]

Please keep the equipment exchange Ads out of other open thread(s) topics.

We have the equipment exchange sub forums for that purpose. If Ads are placed in other areas it just clutters up and over takes the thread topic.

Use PM’s

Thanks

Do you have any info on your work up to share? I get 3000 fps and .6" group at 100yds out of 18" arp using s&b brass, re7 and wolf magnum primers.

A good accuracy load for the 90 Gold Dot is 30.5 gr of 2200, #41 primer, seated to cannelure. Very first group from brand new 18" ARP cut 1/2" at 100 yds. Subsequent groups hovered around 1/2" consistently. That was using the GD pulls, not the brand new bullets.

Here is my post earlier in this thread. To the mods, is there a way to remove the chit chat from these threads so it's easier for people to go through and get the info that is relevant?

"I get 3048fps out of 18" arp barrel using re7, wolf 223srm primers, fc brass with oal of 2.28 in 95 degree temps. 3 shot .6 in group at 100yds

Edit: slight crimp w/ Lfcd"

I use s&b brass now not sure at the moment but think it is less powder

What powder charge re7 with fc brass ? S&b holds slightly more . ( I know may not be safe in my barrels) .

Side note about the earlier LC discussion. Winchester won the management contract back from ATK after 20 years. OLN (Winchester parent) stock is now up about 300%
