They're making it for Q's first run of the caliber in the Fix. Hornady will be making the second batch near 1m rounds. Q is going to be open sourcing the data so other manufacturers can properly chamber it aswell, including the AR platform (although it doesn't look like it will feed too well).

Check out the twist rates...1:3. It's a .338 projectile.

H !!!! We need a .338 Spectre !! "A" would agree with me on that. Wish he was still lurking here too. Many good folks are missed.

We, the original .338 Spectre group, have always said the .338 Spectre is what the .300 BO wanted to be when it grew up. Looks like somebody has decided to make their own version of the .338 Spectre without giving Marty or Tony their due. It may be a different case but if it is geared toward the sub sonic crowd, then it will not do anything better than what the .338 Spectre can do. And the .338 Specter can be formed from 6.8 SPC with a bit of work for higher pressure loadings and the 10 mm Magnum case with no work other than running it through the sizing die for lower pressure loadings, which is what the Spectre was designed around, all the while out of the much lighter AR platform. It even uses standard 9mm suppressors.

My own .338 GRRR, based on a longer .338 Spectre using the 6.8 case, gives a little over 2200 fps with a 165 gr. Maker bullet and will expand down to 900 fps if I want to slow it down. Its only use is to get a bit more speed so you can use it on deer out to 300 yards out of the AR platform. Of course, the Spectre is much better as a sub sonic round with the .338 heavies due to its shorter case. If you want more speed and out of a heavier .308 action, I cannot see anything better than the .338 Federal. Granted, it's not so good as a subsonic round but for a super sonic round, it's hard to beat the .338 F in a .308 length action/case.

Honestly, I love new rounds, but this 8.6 has me scratching my head.

I'll confess, I don't know much about the .338 Spectre, but my brief research on it, it wasn't created to be subsonic, where the 8.6 BLK was, or am I wrong there?

No, the way I understood things from Marty, he created it to be mainly subsonic shooting 250-300 gr. bullets at subsonic velocities and to use standard 9mm pistol sized suppressors. The difference between a .300 BO with a 220 gr. bullet slapping a steel target at 100 yards and the .338 Spectre slapping the same target with a 300 gr. bullet is night and day. While it was not designed to be ONLY subsonic, that was its primary function. The case had to be short and the shoulder set back so that you could use 250-300 gr. SMKs without having to seat below the full diameter portion of the bullet and still use standard 6.8 magazines without modification. The 10mm Magnum case was chosen to be the parent case since it could use a VERY slightly modified 6.8 SPC bolt. By modified I mean, the horns of the extractor are VERY slightly rounded so as not to dig into the case. If you take the time to form the brass from the 6.8 SPC case then you don't even need to do that, but forming from 6.8 cases is more problematic and you need to trim off a good amount of the case as well as neck turning if the brass is too thick. I also recommend annealing after you are done forming, reaming, and trimming. Not all 6.8 brass would need reaming/turning but you'd need to check that. It's much easier to just use 10mm magnum brass if you are going subsonic because you are not running pressures that are over 45K most times. But if you feel the need for speed and want to push things to 54K psi, forming from the 6.8 SPC case is a good idea. For one thing, the 10mm magnum uses LP or LPM primers and most 6.8 brass uses SR or SRM primers.

Well, look what the cat dragged in!!! Don't be such a stranger, just be strange. Good to know you're still alive and kickin', A. Been wondering if all was ok.
