You're fine hitting the field with a 6.8 if you run across a shot in the 250-300 yard range, even farther if your shooting skills are up to it. Contrary to internet myths, the 6.8 doesn't hit a wall at 300 and fall from the sky. :p  Stag will do very well with their Model 7 Hunter. Sixteen and Eighteen inch barrels work very well also. John Noveske posted a deer hunt in the hunting forum where he used one of his 6.8 SBR's.

With some of the great loads and bullet selection available from SSA, or some of the great reloading recipes on this forum, the 6.8 is really a brilliant hunting solution for the AR enthusiast.

For me, if I consistently had 300+ yard shots on large game where I'm hunting, I'd probably use another caliber like a 308, or one of the 300 magnums. But that's just me. I have both of those if needed. However most of my hunting shots have been well within that range so the convenience of a light carbine like a 16" 6.8 fits the situation nicely. I may be using a new deer lease next season that seems to have tighter ranges so the 6.8 will definitely hunt with me all season in state.

So maybe to try and answer some of your questions directly.

Upper - I think the answer there goes to barrel specs. There is alot of info on this forum, but if your talking long range, then I assume you will want to start the bullet off with as much oomph as practical. That means it probably comes down to either a SPCII or DMR chamber with at least an 11 twist barrel. Some 10 twists seem to work well if they have the SPCII chamber, but I would opt for the 11 twist (or one of Constructor's 12 twist when available). From what has been written here, I would say the barrel length is probably your choice. You gain some velocity with length, but not the same differential typical of larger cases/rounds like classic 30 calibers or magnum rounds. I have an 18" barreled upper that I think is a great all around length.

Ammo - If you do not reload, go with the SSA options in the combat loadings (the oomph part plus the varied bullets they use). If you reload, the sky is the limit. In the hunting section you'll read about great results with Sierra pro-hunters, the Barnes 110 TSX and TTSX and the 110 gr Nosler Accubond (evidenced by Constructor's elk shot). There are really great bullets out there and as a reloader, one finds the right combo for your gun, builds confidence with practice and then executes.

As to the stories, I refer you to the Hunting section.

My personal favorite bullet for deer sized game is the Sierra Pro hunter 110g

This bullet will expand as long as you maintain a minimum of 1700 ft / sec velocity

The following data using only a 16" long barrel provided a 330 yd or greater effective range with the 6.8 SPC. Obviously a longer 18" or 20" barrel will extend this effective range even further.

Kerry

Sierra 110 Gr. Pro-Hunters with a muzzle velocity of 2500fps (16" barrel), will expand from 1700+ fps, which leaves a maximum performance range of 330 yards.

Sierra 130 Gr. Pro-Hunters with a muzzle velocity of 2400fps (16" barrel), will expand from 1700+ fps, which leaves a maximum performance range of 341 yards.

With paper you dont have to worry about having enough energy to do damage to a target. I think H would agree with me when I say that the effective range for the 6.8 and keeping above the 1k min for deer sized game is 400-450 depending on bullet and load....

I'm going to have to start bushhogging. I have to shoot out of the back of the truck to get over 100 yards. I will try to shoot some 200 yard groups when I go test my loads that I didn't crimp the hell out of. I'm hoping not crimping so much will increase the velocity a little bit.

Well, I have shot out to 400 but am unable to hike the terrain to confirm anything. I can only go off of the puff of smoke that poofs off the granite when I hit where I am aiming. The rock is as big as decent size game. It shoots pretty straight as I have about a second or less to pull of the sights and get a look as it hits...

Have I killed anything at that range... no. That wouldnt be a problem either given the air and opportunity to do so.
