It basically boils down to...

Leupold vs Japanese in the 1-6x range

the weaver extreme classic is on par with the other top japanese glass like the bushnell elite etc... it is priced to steal @ 289.00 + 13.00 shipping..... its a great scope for the money and has great resale value becuase of the price...

however....

I found an american made Leupold Vx3 1-5x20 30mm illuminated reticle for 359.00... they, unlike thier japanese counterparts... utilize argon-krypton purging instead of dry nitrogen...they are also cryo-treated etc....

for overall ruggedness and dependability which would you select???

Re: *6.8 OPTIC HELP? SELLING RDS 4 VARIABLE PWR SCOPE=3 CHOICES*

The Sightrons have a big following in the BR crowd and Nikon is always a good piece of glass. Between the two I would go for what gave me more of what I wanted personally. If you are looking at shooting small groups on paper I would go for the most magnification as I can see you are doing. I know many use low power 4x to mid 6-9 for most target work but for me I like the most magnified view I can get for shooting even 100 yards. The bigger the POA looks the better for me as the more I can see the movement I cause and the better I can work on it. The ideal magnification @ 100 for best line up for me is when the 1" box grid line lines are at least the same size as the cross hair lines in my sight picture. Not saying its right but it is what allows me to shoot my best groups.

One thing you need to realize with these scopes is exit pupil size. The smaller it is the more y9our weld will be critical and the harder to find it will be. The bigger the obj lens the better the exit pupil given the same magnification so I would be looking at that. 50 would be good. but even 42 works. Many use even the 36x with them and that is a very small exit pupil indeed.

I agree with Tim, the bigger the objective lens the better, I currently have a Nikon 4.5-14x40 on my 6.8 and the optics are great and the bdc is super for hold over. The cost is about $300 depending on where you shop.

You have some good choices listed. Of the three Nikon, and Bushnell 4200 would be on my list. I just do not have any experience with Sightron so I will not comment either way. I like the new Nikon Monarch models like you're looking at. I think their glass is very good for the price. And we know the 4200 series is one of Bushnell's top lines.

Re: *6.8 OPTIC HELP? SELLING RDS 4 VARIABLE PWR SCOPE=3 CHOICES*

I have been stalking the Millett Dms-1 for a while since it has a true 1x and the dot-in-donut reticle is wonderful... its just not made to the specs that I desire like the Zoom Dot is.... for another hundred bux I can get a bushnell even though it doesnt have the fast target acquisition of the dms-1.... I might as well get a leapers accushot and call it a day  ... not really .....

where are the sightrons made???

Where Nikon rifle scopes are built is a good question. My guess would be Japan. They do have a service center in CA. Someone with a newer Nikon, look at your box and tell us where it came from!

I would be 50-50 between the new Nikon Monarchs and the Bushnell 4200's. Did you find someplace local that has both in stock where you could play with them for the final choice? Luckily I've got a large Cabela's nearby, and large gun shows where I can play with scope candidates.

http://www.swfa.com/pc-13201-185-bushne ... scope.aspx Is this the Bushnell you're looking at? The illuminated dot may swing the scale to Bushnell 4200 in case you ever have to shoot in low light or night.

I do like Nikons and I have a 2.5-10x42 Mildot Monarch planned for a rifle project, if I don't buy the Horus Vision Hawk that John Boyette has mentioned.

Re: *6.8 OPTIC HELP? SELLING RDS 4 VARIABLE PWR SCOPE=4 CHOICES*

its falling between the nikon and bushnell.... the nikon is 100.00 less but the bushnell has a couple more features as well as a firefly or illuminated reticle...

If I can get a stellar deal on the bushnell it shall be had....

Holy Crap Batman!! That's a great buy. Natchez even has a German #4 reticle model for the same price.

Nikon made in the Phillipines (or how ever you spell it), what it said on my Monarch & Buckmaster boxes. I believe the glass is made in japan at the main factory where Nikon makes all of there lenses. Where ever, they are clear enough to see though hell.

Natchez has some good deals, where I bought my Monarch from on closeout...steller deal.

Re: *6.8 OPTIC HELP? SELLING RDS 4 VARIABLE PWR SCOPE=7 CHOICES*

So which scope do you guys prefer? The Nikon Monarch or the Weaver? I like the Nikon 1.5-6x42 since it will be a bit brighter and has a larger exit pupil. Any experience with that nikoplex (?) reticle versus the German #4? The Weaver looks like a great deal though. BTW, I just returned a Millet DMS 1-4x24 since I had a difficult time seeing down the thing. Maybe it's just me.

Re: *6.8 OPTIC HELP? SELLING RDS 4 VARIABLE PWR SCOPE=7 CHOICES*

the hit and miss with the millet dms-1 is the reason I wont buy one...even though some swear by it... I own a millett zoom dot and will swear by it but it is made in the us to more concrete specs... in order to compete with aimpoint / eotech etc... its tolerances are greater than all of them across the board.... too bad they dont build the dms-1 that solid or it would be mine.....

I looked at a bushnell eleite 4200 and that scope is nice... I will most likely spring for the weaver...save 100.00.... then rattle can it...
