6.8 build *updated with pics*

2835 Views 19 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  rpwhite3
I went and picked up most of the parts I needed today to finish my first 6.8 build. (Pics tomorrow night)...

But have a question, when I attempted to push the rear pin out of my lower it wouldn't budge. I had to loosen the butt-stock to get it off, so while I did this I removed the spring and pin to make sure I didn't put the pin in backwards.. Well I quickly figured out you can't, but with just a bit of pressure on the spring I can't make the rear pin work. Its almost like the pin is square (its not I looked) and once you apply pressure, it just won't budge. And yes I flung that bad boy a couple times, testing it.. :)

Before I 'engineer' it I wanted to make sure to get comments here. As this is my first build. What do I need to do?

Also I got the ARMS flip up front sight, do I use red locktite on those screws?

All I lack right now is the rear BUIS (which I will get tomorrow) and the scope mount (New burris mnt, supposed to ship EOM March).. I am so close. :)

Thoughts?

Re: 6.8 build

My rear pin is also tight and I use screwdriver or a punch to get it out.

Put loctite on the front and rear BUIS.

You probably want the blue loktite. It will hold it but if you want to move it later it will take hand tools and not a blowtorch.
Re: 6.8 build

243 is the oil resistant blue, 242 isn't. The red is like super tight, need to heat it with a heatgun before you break it. I've heard stories about that red shit, be carful with it.
Re: 6.8 build

My takedown pin was real tight as well on my first build. I used a punch to take it out. Also, before I mated the upper with the lower, I worked it in and out about 100 times. It made mine work smoother, not sure it will work with yours but it's worth a shot.

Now what do you mean by working it in? As I am waiting for the completion of my first AR build? I have a complete lower just waiting for my extreme upper.

Look at the slot in the pin, there should be 2 small indents down in the slot one front one rear, these need to be beveled.
A slightly larger drill bit usually works to slope the edge of the hole/indent, do not deepen the hole.
Next look at the small pin, some are more square tipped and some are very pointed. You want these to snap into the indent but not so far that it hangs up, if the pin is sharp or square round it off a little.

Thanks guys for the info, once I tapped it and 'worked' it a couple times, lubed it up, now its much better, just worried I was going to break the dam thing... Now off to the build, just completed my renewal class for my CHL and scored 250 out of 250 on the pistol range.. Sweet, 15 yards is quite far, but none outside the 8 ring! :)

I am proud of my self, my Beretta 96FS worked flawlessly! It shoots well...

Oh and at the range we shot at I happened to find some H322 so I picked up 3 pounds of that too. The guy there said he just got it, and I got lucky, I asked about 8lb jugs and he said nope. And don't expect any any time soon, he said the dealer told him they were just trying to get the 1lb jugs out for now. Plus I am sure they make more on it, when I asked about primers he laughed...

Ok off to build...Pics later I promise.

Re: 6.8 build

Ok here you go... I am so happy it's almost done, a couple things left to do but...

Pic1
This is the main lower/upper shot. You can see the finish details pretty good, as they are very different, my buddy thinks that if I work in some gun oil they will soon match, etc.. and a little test of this theory proves it... :)

Pic2
Backed out view showing more of the rear of the gun, or the business end. And that stock is the one I won in a monthly drawing here!!! Kewl...

Pic3
Playing with Camera to get a shot of the Bushnell Holosight that is currently on the gun, came out better than I anticipated.

Pic4
Front end, and yes before anyone comments the crush washer is missing on the Flash Suppressor, the guy gave us the wrong ones :(... Simple fix Monday... Troy 9" MRF-M Free Float.

Ok Specs.

Double Star Lower, Bravo Co Upper, MagPul MOE, (WOA 16 inch, 1/11, spcII Stainless Match, Bolt), Troy MRF-M 9", ARMS #41 Front BUIS, YHM Flash Suppressor, Single Point Sling

Just started the process to break in the gun (500 times.....) my arms are tired, I have a long way to go. GF went to bed so I have to stop for now... :)

Still to get, Rear BUIS, rail covers, Bushnell Scope Mount for Weaver 3.5-10 Illuminated, cool case...

Nice looking stick. Good work.
Thanks! I am very happy with my first build, have to do yard work but then am going to Gander Mountain and picking up a Digital Case for it. On sale for 39 bux, 42 Inch, should fit perfect.

:D  :p :D  8)

Can't wait to shoot it, but that might be a couple weeks, I am in FortWorth next weekend for the Nascar Race, then in Dallas all week, so maybe that next weekend... Already got my SSA ammo ready to go...

:)

Glad you got everything working, and congradulations on your first build. So what do you got planned for the next.  Sorry I didn't get back to you about how I got my rear pin working smoothly, I have been in Waco all weekend. But from what I read it sounds like you did the exact same thing that I did.

Yes nothing a little hammer and tap with punch can't take care of. My next build is being built for me, on Xtreme list, but want to build another 223/556 too, thinking either a SBR or a 16 similar to the 6.8, his little brother :)...

So question, what does it take to build a SBR, since I know the barrel is short, are there permits or something I have to get, any websites I should look/peruse...

First you will need the paperwork. I set up a trust, filled out a form 1, mailed a 200 dollar check, and waited about 3 months. Once you recieve your tax stamp you can build the sbr ,not untill then (unless you want to risk prison time). There is good info on AR15.com under armory the general class 3. There are different ways to get the stamp it was just the least painfull way for me. Hope this helps.
Nice build. very close to what I have planned. LMK how your barrel accuracy is after break in.

Ok so today I go out and pick up a Troy Industries Diamond rear BUIS, tonight I install and this is what it looks like. Seems odd to me that you can't even lay the sight down?

This picture shows with just normal sight selected, you can see it won't lay flat? Could I have mounted it incorrectly? Just seems impossible it could be built this way?

And here is the image with the other other sight selected, which in turn interfers with the laydown even more????

Am I missing something, could I have been given the wrong thing?

I have no idea, also the crush washer I got doesn't work either :(....MAN this last 5% is turning out to be a biatch... ;)

The Troy rear buis is made to mount at the rear most grove in the upper. Then it will fold down. Hope this helps.

Ok will give that a try in the morning, but still don't see how that will help as the edges hit the edges of the picatany rail? Plus if you flip the other 'sight' then it for sure won't go down, but i will give it a try to see.

Thanks for the reply.

The area of your rail, behind the last slot, over the charging handle latch, is slimmer than the rail from that point forward.

The ears of the sight will fit down around this thinner portion.

It doesn't work farther forward because the rail is full width.
