Anybody out there mess with or have a 458SOCOM?

I have no practical need for one, but the concept of a big bore ala "Thumper" intrigues me.
I also like that it utilizes your standard 223 AR mags and comparable low entry cost (seems to be a theme with me) especially when compared to say 450BM.

Thoughts?

Oh I've almost pulled that trigger several times, always having something else come forward to take precedence. By the end of the year one should find its way home!

I am on the fence. Cost of ammo is a little high for me to jump right in. Must find one to shoot first :)

Cold the owner of this sight is a proud big bore junky. Send him a PM as he is fairly busy now ans might not see this post and ask him any questions you have. Be aware that after talking to him you may end up with a smaller bank account. Also check out our sister site also run by Cold http://458socomforums.com/

Cool! Thanks for the contact info and link. Site appears down for maintenance but I will check back.
Now, I wouldn't have such a big bore itch if we could get some of those heavier bullets to fit in my 6.8 magwell :)

My thoughts... its the BEST big bore round going, the little guy won that battle aka the designer of the round Marty of http://www.teppojutsu.com

www.rockriverarms.com makes uppers for the masses, Marty of www.teppojutsu.com will do a custom gun say in SBR 10.5 in configuration if you want, otherwise RRA is a great buy. Using standard AR mags sealed the deal for me, the 450 BM and 50 B use a slightly modified mag in some ways. None of the big bores can be used with a beta mag however.

Here is a 5 shot group at 100 yards with 405 grain 458 SOCOM loads.

http://www.corbon.com loads ammo

so does

Cold,
How much Rel7 did you use for that group and were they rem 405gr? My 405 shot horrible, but the 300JHP shot well and I had a 1.25" 5 shot group with my 300gr tsx also.

I went with the socom simply because if you reload there is just so much you do with the round with all the available types of bullets. User beware though!!!! my 6.8 sat in the safe for many a month when I got my socom and tinkering with both lightens my wallet every month!!

Thanks for the info! I came close to getting a 450BM upper during their Tax Days sale but the fact it didn't use stock AR mags was a deal breaker. Luckily, I remembered that 458SOCOM does. RRA's 458 upper everyday price is very comparable to the BM's sale price.

Thanks for the list of ammo suppliers -- I will check them out. I heard rumors that another big ammo player might be coming online soon. Regardless, based on CorBon's pricing, I definitely would need to reload it.

What is the recoil comparable to?

After the 6.8 SPC a 458 Socom makes the most sense
to me for an AR upper. I'll have one some day.

I like shooting 0.458 shot groups with every round.

:)
