A .5" diameter case...in an AR-15?

As an article in AccurateShooter.com said

"WHAT WAS REMINGTON THINKING?"

I think the 6.8 SPC was a great idea. Then Remington took that great idea and screwed it up beyond all recognition every which way from Sunday, and then apparently dropped it like a hot potato and went looking for something else to muck up.

Why in the SAM HILL would they ignore their own excellent AR cartridge, the 6.8 REMINGTON SPC, for their own AR?

Now seriously, how many AR shooters would be attracted to a 4 round single stack mag? And loaded with short fat 30 caliber bullets guaranteed to shed velocity faster than a dog sheds hair?

The 6.8 has to be superior in every category imaginable.

I haven't seen one of these yet or looked at the bolt/barrel extension. I suspect it's a AR-10 class bolt with a modified AR bolt

carrier made to accept it. They obviously are trying to drum up interest as a hunting cartridge, the four round limit precludes

using it in any NRA event. I think they will get very good results in the accuracy department if they use Sierra's new 135 grain hp

Match King. Good velocity too. It will not fly as a hunting round with that bullet. The new bullet has a B.C. around .400, pretty

good but not great. Equal to a standard 150 grain .308 FMJ. I doubt it will take off and become one of the companies darlings.

Tim and I disassembled one at Shot, It is a AR10 bolt head but the body of the bolt is ar15 and the carrier is ar15. The barrel extension is ar10 sized.
The weird thing is the extractor was not in the bolt but, if it was it would have 2 -90 degree bends just behind the lugs to get down to the ar15 bolt size.
If Remington had a clue it could get pretty good velocity but, they don't.
Definitely a hunting round until the wildcatters get ahold of it. think 6mmBRX!!!!

But...can anyone explain why Remington did not chamber the R-15 for 6.8 SPC?

They did something with the R-25 that I've been wanting to see - they chambered it in 7mm-08. I've wondered for a long time why we have leverguns, single shots, and bolt actions chambered in 7mm-08, but no semiautos. Well...now we do...

Does anyone know whether the R-25 can take standard AR-10 mags? Should not be any problem using 7mm-08 in a 7.62 mag...right?

I'm guessing you meant a DPMS mag? The ones that are constructed of UNOBTAINium. :D

Aren't the original AR-10 mags interchangeable with SR-25 mags?
Yes. From DPMS FAQ:

Do other magazines work in the LR-308 (DPMS) line of rifles?
Yes, the original AR-10 Stoner waffle 20 round magazines and the Knights Armament SR-25™ 10 & 20 round magazines will also work.

The story is that someone at Remington has another cartridge and is in competition with the 6.8 for military adoption. He vowed to destroy the 6.8.
I would say he is doing a good job of making Remington look bad. I have a completely different view of Remington after all of the blunders they have had in the last few years.
A little model 7 action would make a nice lightweight hunter and the 700 action is good other than that I will never buy another Remington.

This came from an industry insider, it wasn't really a conversation about the guy more like a comment in passing and he would not say who.
Maybe the 6.5 MPC.
There is a retired general who is either promoting the SSK industries round or ask SSK to build it.
Could be the guy but I haven't wasted time trying to find out.

According to Remington's own website it has a muzzle velocity of 2278 fps with a 125 gr softpoint. This is less than the 7.62x39

This also probably explains why DPMS is dropping the 6.8 from their line.

Geez, Remington can't anything right. They even screwed up their website about the 30 RAR. That column is supposed to be labeled "200 yard velocity", not muzzle velocity.

I called Remington a few years ago (when they stopped production of 6.8 brass) and asked them if they were trying to kill the 6.8 SPC. I told them that if they were, they were doing a darned good job of it.
