I read on the Cardinal Arms site about the choice between the rifle or intermediate gas length for the 20" bbl. in 6.8. They said that the rifle length may be "problematic with lighter bullets and faster powders". I know several of you have the 20" and would like some input on this issue as I am planning a 20" rifle length in 6.8 (not by Cardinal) in the near future. Any problems with the 85 Barnes or 90 gr. loads? The barrel will be a 20" SS with 4 groove, 1 in 11" twist, SPCII chamber and the buffer is a carbine with SSS spring. Thanks in advance!

For the bullets and powders you will be using, I would actually prefer the Mid length System. But out of those two I would definitely get the Intermediate. The Rifle Length system with the 20" barrels is not good at all unless you just want to use the heavier bullets with the slower powders.

I have had 5- 20" uppers with rifle gas systems personally and built about 60 in the past 8 mths. I have only had a few calls about short stroking. One was due to a port in the gas tube in the wrong location, mine only short strokes with 4198 and 4227. However an intermediate location may be a safer bet if shooting light loads, even a mid length would not be as hard on a 6.8 as a carbine location is on a 5.56.

I probably won't be using light loads power wise but do plan to plan to use everything from 85 gr. Barnes to 130 gr. Speers. So you think the intermediate length would be best? This narrows my options for forends. I'm thinking of the YHM customizable with the gas block folding front sight.

The intermediate is between the mid and rifle so no float will hit exactly a mid will be too short a rifle will cover it.

Thanks constructor,I see YHM makes a Specter length custom. rail. Will that work with the gas block YHM flip sight for the intermediate length gas tube? I do like the idea of the rifle length on a 20" for the longer sight plane but not if it will sacrifice reliability.

The Spector Length rail is a little short (app .5"). Your best bet would be to get a low-profile gas blosck that goes under the 12" handguard. It would look real nice.

That is how my 18 is set up with the low pr gas block and the rifle length rail... with the comp it goes out to about 19.5 or so... i think it is a sexy set up.

Here is my Contructor built upper. 12" FF on 18" barrel with mid gas system with the aac black out flash suppressor.

But to answer your question, I think I would want either the itermediate or mid gas system. You may want to check out going with an 18" barrel. There is really now diff from 16 to 18 and minimal from 16 to 20 so I went with 18 for the "SPR" look. But either way I go I'm sure it will be nice.

Those rifle length both look nice guys. I checked out that Larue at the SHOT show and it had a nice feel to it, not too wide.
I like that camo job marine. 8)

Thanks, it is the Larue 12". Don't have the can yet still waiting.....but I did have them ship the flash suppressor so I could finish the rifle. Still needs a larue spr mount and scope...but funds are slowing thing down a bit for the momment.

Thanks Bushdog, I like the look of the rifle length handguards too. The larue does have a nice low profile too it and fits nice in the hand.

A, some day I want to paint it, I know everyone says it comes off with break cleaner I just can't bring myself to do it yet.
